This is a wiki where anyone can post information about their made-up worlds, species, etc. We're very new, so we don't have much set up yet. If you want to contribute, read about basic editing, and our category system and style guidelines. You can also see the documentation index for more information.

News:

(Reply in bullet points under the news item. Add new news items at the top.)

Another new thing! I've come up with an accurate firepower system, and I've started adding firepower entries to my ships. I'll post up how it works on the weapons classes page shortly. ~Scout

New feature! You can make a Table of Contents with (:toc:). ~Daniel

  • Most pages with multiple headers now have tables of contents. ~Scout

Only because I think the Wiki is getting lonely... Happy B-Day to me, Nov. 25! :) ~Dalton

I have been talking with Mike, and he has considered having me copy the stuff about the Kraid from the other wiki into this one. I have spoken to Scouut and he doesn't seem very excited about it, but acording to Mike, Daniel doesn't mind. Maybe we should all converse on the idea? He can type stuff up on word at his internet-less house (poor soul), load it up onto his bottomless tumb drive, at school Email it to me, and I post the stuff he comes up with at "Mike" as the author. Just a thought. I believe you all have his Email. ~Dalton

  • The big big huge problem about this is that Known Space is completely saturated with species as it is, and we were already making an exception by allowing the Entra. So I really just don't think that it's going to work. ~Scout

Sweetness, Scout, you get an award for making the Stories thing. w00t, added some old pictures I drew a long time ago. Not sure where they were hiding, but they're relevant to the Wiki so I posted them. Huzzah. ~Dalton

I made a new species with a story attached. They are the Tortia?. I left the story wide open, so someone can use it! ~Dalton

  • Whoah whoah whoah. You can't jump the gun like that. If you're going to throw in a new species, it has to be with the the approval of everyone on the wiki. We have to talk over whether they're going to fit into the increasingly-overcrowded Known Space setting, we have to decide how they're going to fit politically into the power spectrum, and we have to be okay with it. Keep your ideas off the wiki until we've all had a chance to talk about them. ~Pieboy

Am I the only person who describes what they edit in the Summary field? It is really helpful to tell if someone merely edited something small or added a whole new species! I feel sad :( I'm the only person posting... it's like the Mike-Scout-Me wiki all over again :( ~Dalton

  • You do seem to be. I suppose I could use it, but generally it's pretty easy to tell what's going on and I tend to work on things in a pretty fragmented manner. I'll try. And you're the only person posting right now because the wiki just never is very busy. I'm "around" a lot but I don't have ideas all the time. ~Daniel

Another enhancement—new way to make a signature. It's a bit hard to demonstrate, as the wiki will insist on converting it into a sig even if it's enclosed in [@ @]'s. It's tilde-"sig," in other words a ~ and then the word "sig." It behaves like the 3~ markup but includes making italics and the leading ~. I can change what it is, maybe to ~~ or 4~ (which is itself a replace-thing, but I should be able to override it). ~Daniel

I made a change to the template for the wiki so that you no longer have to use the (:title:) directive to get a spaced page name. Instead, PmWiki will insert a space before capital letters. For instance, DekariMilitaryShips is correctly autospaced. If there's a problem, let me know. ~Daniel

  • Note that if you don't want the autospacing, you can use the (:title:) directive to force it to do whatever you want. This just makes the most common use case of (:title:) automatic. ~Daniel

New category! Military for tactics/strategy, fleet organization, and military ships. Civ ships go under tech—split the ships pages into two per race to keep the length down, and crosslink them. ~Daniel

I'm back! And as a gift to everyone on the forum, I have updated the Norcaroians? page and have added the Fronari page. I will work on the Terran Imperial Regime (AKA Terran Empire) page soon, and the Hogrog? page might need updating as well. But I'm back. ~Kadiir

We would love to have any body who wants to edit the other new wiki come and join us. ~Mike

  • I've been cleaning up grammar and spelling a lot. Don't have much to add right now really. ~Daniel

I would like to know who and how the Known Space map was made. ~Mike

  • Scout made it in Illustrator. It's not difficult to do but Illustrator costs $400 and the free alternative, Inkscape, isn't nearly as good. ~Daniel

Screwup fixed, sorta. Some pages are missing, but AllRecentChanges has a list of all the pages that were changed. Everything from 2/29 or later is gone, but everything else is fine. ~Daniel

We've got a new species, the Zaan. I'll have more stuff up as I think of it. ~Scout

So, I'm adding stuff on Garling language structure. As soon as I have all the basic structure figured out, I'll probably construct a small dictionary, which I'll add to whenever I get any new words into the language. Also, this will help me make good names. ~Scout

Hey Grif, you've got both a Zalamath and Zalamar category. ~Scout

Suggestion: When making minor changes to a page, such as fixing grammar, punctuation or spelling, use the summary box to explain what you did. I personally like to know exactly what was changed, and since the wiki doesn't highlight exactly where the change was made I have to look for it, and spotting one-letter changes is easier said than done. For example, Grif, when you corrected a typo on the Dekaris page, a good summary would have been "Change continet>continent in Geography section." ~Daniel

Anybody noticed how the Silth don't really fit in? ...Yeah. I think I'm going to drop them from known space and possibly replace them with another race which I'll try to keep under control from the start. I'm not much of a culture- and world-builder, though, so I'd appreciate some help (also: name? please?!). The basic concept for this race isn't that complicated. Sentient plant-creatures that use other plants and animals for everything much like the Yuuzhan Vong. They aren't quite as nasty as the YV or the Zorga, but they would have some trouble dealing with the other races of Known Space seeing as they aren't used to the thought that mere animals can be sentient. They also probably can't talk or use conventional radio channels, which would make communication difficult. So they might get into a fight for much the same reasons as the Zalamath and Terrans did--some general paranoia or shock response at the idea of sentient creatures from the animal kingdom (unthinkable!) and lack of communication--but they'd probably stop once they figured out communication and stuff. ~Daniel

  • That sounds great, actually. That's a really nice concept for a race. I'd like to see where this goes, especially since I plan on bringing the Tzaru-Sokinu further into the fold soon. ~Pieboy
  • Thanks. Maybe we can all collaborate on this one, seeing as I'm no great culture-builder. I call tech and ships! (And I promise not to make them overpowered.) ~Daniel
  • They've become the Dekari now and I've made a bunch of pages. Everything should link from (and back to) that page one way or another. ~Daniel

It has come to my attention that we are adding way too many guns to ships for their sizes, particularly on corvettes and frigates. If you look at actual naval ships, they only have about sixteen turrets on the aircraft carriers, and twenty-five turrets on battleships (not counting the missiles). Now, our ships are quite a bit bigger and more advanced, but not that much, and main guns are generally bigger. Corvettes should have no more than ten guns on the largest, and less if they're specialized (carriers, supplies). Small frigates should have no more than ten turrets (not including point defense arrays) and two main guns, and large frigates should really have no more than twenty turrets and six main guns. Point defense arrays should range up to about 125% of the amount of turrets. There may be exceptions (i.e., six large rail guns but no actual turrets on a frigate). By the way, fighters should never have any more than six guns and no turrets unless they carry stuff like torpedoes which they lug around, which I'll leave up to you people to figure out realistically. Also, don't overdo the missiles on frigates and corvettes. Thank you. ~Scout

  • Makes sense. The one thing I would say is that some large fighters, especially bombers, might have a single very large turret and then only one or two other weapons. Some fighter weapons may also be able to swivel significantly, though not through a full 360 degrees. Also, what about capital ships? I'd suggest like 25-30 main turrets (or less, depending on size of turret and ship) + 10-15 main guns or swap 4-6 of those main guns for a superweapon. Motherships and flagships should be dealt with case-by-case, seeing as they're so big and vary so much in size and shape. ~Daniel
  • This should be on the classification page. I'll add it. ~Daniel

I'm adding stuff about one of the terran rebellion factions, Rezslekovia. ~Scout

Wiki has been updated to a slightly newer version and divide by zero errors have been fixed. If anything else acts weird, let me know and I'll fix it. ~Daniel

I have become semi-fluent in the use of Blender, a much better 3D program than DOGA, and I have come up with what a Garling Covert Ops Corvette looks like, having made it in Blender. I'll post up pictures at some point or email them to you, Daniel. Grif already saw them. ~Scout

  • As have I. I posted a Carrier render and will post a Mantis render soon. The other ships are harder, for many reasons. ~Daniel

I've been slaving basically all day, and it's finally done. Zalamath Ships are here. Not to mention a complete reworking of the Zalamath-Terran War stuff. Whew.-- Pieboy

  • Looks good. I cleaned it up a bit. Suggestion for ships pages: Use the (:linebreaks:) markup, that way you don't have to use \\ at the end of each line. ~Daniel
  • Thank you. --Pieboy
  • You're welcome. ~Daniel

I cleaned up the Uploads directory a bit over FTP. It was getting rather oversized, I must say. I wonder if we could divide it into subfolders, or whether that would make uploads stop working? ~Daniel

Hey, Scout? Please stop posting the "Under Construction" image. As Grif said, we don't need that—a wiki is always under construction. Please just add more content until the page is reasonably complete. ~Daniel

Just so that people know, I have been updating. This site is not dead. No sir. ~Scout

  • I've finished up the Garling and Kimean ship profiles for now, although I am going to add more that are not listed there. Xoria and Xorian related stuff is probably next after that, and then Sar Kerith, and then Zorga. ~Scout
  • Yay! Daniel

We need updatingfulness. I'm working on more of the ships and technology for GNK and others. I hope to have the Xorian tech page up soon. Anyone who needs ship renders just ask me and give me a picture to work from. I've already made a Silth splitwing for Daniel. ~Scout

  • Yes, we do. I've been busy, but I could maybe write some stuff. Also, I should go over to your house again and see if we can make another ship. –Daniel
  • That would be cool. I've got some ideas for textures on the splitwing that I need you to look over. Why is the Garling History page there twice? ~Scout
  • Well, I may or may not be able to come over anytime soon. Everybody: When do you have breaks? And are you going away, or are you at home and available for at least part of the time?
The Garling History page was there twice because Main.TheWar had turned into a Garling history page, somebody moved the content to Main.GarlingHistory and blanked TheWar, and then I thought somebody had blanked it just to be mean and restored it. Since it's exactly the same page as GarlingHistory, I deleted it and there is now only one Garling history page. –Daniel
  • Be helpful if I told you when my breaks are, mm? Anyways: I have a break 2/24-3/4, and then sometime at the end of April, but that's too far off to matter. I also have some days off, but we're reading a book right now in English, and we won't be done until break, so probably the earliest I'm available is then. I'll be able to talk on the phone, though, and if I happen to have done all my HW already on a weekend I might be available one day. Maybe even this weekend...So. </ramble> –Daniel

I'm going to add a standardization category for stuff like Main.Classification and Main.Timeline. It'll make stuff easier. ~Scout

We has a login system! Everybody should see a login link at the top of the page. Click it, enter username and password. You are now logged in. As of now, that doesn't mean anything, but it soon will. I just have to figure out how to make it so you can only view, and not do anything else, unless you're logged in. –Daniel

  • Okay, you now have to log in to do anything. Like, anything at all. You can view, and I should make it so you can edit the Wiki Sandbox, but you can't upload or edit. There's a nice "Login" link, though, and an admin password (which Nick and I know) which can be used to override any of this. –Daniel
  • Oh, and you also can't even view Site.AuthUser unless you're logged in, because it has the list of usernames on it. –Daniel

Somebody (who didn't give an authorname, but has IP address 68.42.214.75) deleted all the content on Main.TheWar?! Not nice! Who did it, and why, and what should I do about it? –Daniel

  • I restored the previous content, but I'm still wondering what's going on. –Daniel

Daniel, would you mind loading your stupendous standardized timeline up here? -Grif?

  • Okay. It's very unfinished right now, but I guess we should be editing it up here anyways. –Daniel
  • It's up, and much fancier than it was on my computer, at Timeline. –Daniel

Okay, I just recently got the awesome program known as DoGA L3. Before this I had L1, the trial, and that was free, but somewhat limited. Now I have a much better version, and I can make and use textures, glows, more colors, and a lot. If you want me to make a ship or something, send me an email with the picture of the ship and I'll see what I can do. By the way, a quadruple dash shows the time you make the edit along with your profile. ~Scout, December 12, 2006, at 11:55 AM

  • Neat! Can you just look at my ship gallery and see if you can copy any of them? If you don't have time or don't want to do all of them, that's ok—I'm fine with the drawings as they are—but I'd love to see them in full 3D. Any questions (since all my ships, even the fighters, are weirder in 3D than they are in 2D), just send me an email. Though I myself don't really know exactly how they would look, so we might have some talking to do. -Daniel
  • Here's an example picture featuring the Kimean Scout.

    ~Scout, December 12, 2006, at 09:02 PM
  • Cool! -Daniel

Whoever added titles to all the pages, yay to you! And Scout, thanks for all the stuff you've added or fixed on various pages. The classification page seems to be being edited, I say we start loosely applying it. I've changed my ship gallery to reflect the ship classifications (which makes me realize how very few large ships I have), and I'll eventually change my other pages. ~ Daniel

Okay, if we want to chat real-time, use this link: http://gabbly.com/li8-214.members.linode.com/species-wiki/ ~Scout

  • Cool. Though we can just use Gmail chat... ~ Daniel
  • With multiple peoples. ~Scout
  • Yeah, that's true. Though that chat thing is rather slow. Maybe you all have faster computers than I do, but it freezes up my computer. That won't be a problem in a few months (new computer! yay!) but even then, it's easier to just use the phone (I have 3-way calling). And I like talking better than chat for wiki stuff. -Daniel

Could someone remind me how to add Hogrogs to the Known Space and Species areas? Kadiir

  • !Species !Known Space ~Scout

Add email addresses to profiles! It will make contacting a lot easier for us all! ~Scout

  • Good idea. Don't we all already have each other's emails, though? Daniel

Post, people! Scout and I are trying to work out a universal time and classification system (for our benefit), but we'll need some help. What we have can be found here. Please add your suggestions (on that page, not here)! Daniel

Migrated! Nick

Hey! Who killed my pagelist on the known space page? And then pointed me to standardization?, which has nothing on it? Pagelists are useful! And if you want to add to one, I think you can just use ->* to make extra entries indented (if the page doesn't exist yet, I mean). And besides, we should just make those pages. Any page on that list that doesn't yet exist, create, write a paragraph, and link back, and then we can use a pagelist. Daniel

  • The standardization page is a talk page. It will have things on it later, once we have talked on it. I wasn't the pagelist murderer, though. Grif?

Related to above -- I think category pages should continue to exist, but world/species categories (subcategories, really) such as !Silth should have their pagelists on the page about them, so Silth things would link to Main.Silth, and there would be a pagelist like the one in Category.Groupheader at the bottom of such pages. I've already done that, actually, to make the Silth part of the wiki easier to navigate. See the bottom of the Silth? page for an example. I think. Daniel

I exist, and I'm getting to work on creating the Norcaroians and stuffs, I'll get around to Hogrogs when I'm done with that. But anyway, I'm working on it. Any advice on what I need to do most, please tell me at kadiirthunderlance@gmail.com. -Kadiir

I recently downloaded the Irrlicht engine and it's companion scene creator irrEdit, and I was thinking that I should use it for something. Then I realized: we don't have any images of planets. Using irrEdit, I could make little 3d representations of the planets. If anyone wants to send in maps of planets that they want to turn into 3d, you could email them to me at (this isn't my email address). The maps should be rectangular, like this one. --max

  • I dunno what Zia would look like, but I have a good description. Maybe I'll make a map sometime. Daniel

I just noticed something. To sign something, we have to type 3 double characters. , -- and again, plus our name. Why don't we just use the ~Daniel method of signing? That way it's just one triple character and you don't have to remember to close the italics. -Daniel

  • Strategic! --max
  • BTW, it converts three tildes to the ~name thing even if you put [@@]'s around it. So it's not that ~ is to Profiles.* as ! is to Category.*, but that 3 tildes makes ~(Authorname), which is equvalent to Profiles.Authorname. Daniel

I deleted the Frescan System, because it was only like one page. I've got it mirrored on my computer, for Sentimental Value. --max

  • That was yours? Oh. I thought it was kinda cool. But I haven't looked at it in a long time. Anyways, do keep the backup, we may have a place for it. --Daniel

Try updating again, party peoples! I know Scout and Kadiir have tons of canon to add! Get to it! --grif

  • Do I exist? Seems so. --Scout
  • People are, like, back! Wow! --Daniel

Sorry for writing so much stuff. But I have a question. Would anybody mind if I told a bunch of people about this, and we had all sorts of people coming and looking at all this? Long story as to why, but would anybody mind? --Daniel

  • I wouldn't... --grif
  • Ok. Good. And Grif? Look up. Please respond in bullets! --Daniel

I just looked at the page index, and there are a lot of miscellaneous pages. Permission to delete pages like SpeciesCulture which have no real content and should be categories (in fact are categories - culture and history are both categories and are both in the sidebar)? --Daniel

  • Oh yeah, delete that one. It's left over from when we switched to the CategorySystem. --max
  • What about SpeciesTechnology, SpeciesPlanetsAndBases etc? --Daniel
  • Crap! Those were here too? We should leave them! I don't think we were supposed to delete the other one! Exclamation points! --max
  • I wouldn't delete stuff if it was unique. All the stuff on those pages are on other pages, I'm just asking for persmission to delete them since they do have content, it's just duplicate and non-category system-compliant content. They're basically non-self-updating categories, and all the links in them are broken. --Daniel
  • I deleted them, along with ListOfSpeciesOld and War. Nick or I can recover them, but they really shouldn't be here. If anybody needs the lists that were there, tell me and I'll make them into RTF files. Sorry if this is a problem, I check the wiki regularly and I'll fix it if anybody needs them.--Daniel

I think it makes sense for races to be categories as well as worlds, and I talked to Nick and he says OK. I'll change some pages, but I can't change them all so if you see pages without that please fix them. I put this in category system as well. --Daniel

Thank you everyone who posted names on name ideas!! I've chosen a name for my race! They're now officially the Silth. I've also named their (now destroyed) planet - Zia - so they're also known as Zians, but that's an early history name. I'll be moving all my pages and editing their content. If you notice broken links, please try to point them where they should go. Also, if you notice "these creatures", "my/this race" or similar in the body of the new pages, replace it with their name. I'll try to catch all those now though. The name ideas page is staying, because now I need a "world" name. I'm also a little unclear if it's "Zian system" or "Planet Zia" and other stuff like that. --Daniel

  • Actually, the name ideas page is going away now since I don't really need it. --Daniel

How do you turn a page into a self-updating category? There's a "Category.Profiles" page, but it doesn't self-update using !Profiles. How can it be made to/would you please make it do so? --Daniel

  • Working on it myself, and it's not going too well. It is the correct type of page, but for some reason it doesn't self-update correctly. The homepage (this page) is on there at the bottom but it's not in the markup, and other pages with !Profiles in them don't show up. I tried deleting the page, but it's still there with only the Hompage entry. Links to it are edit links, but there is conent, just it doesn't show up as markup. Nick, could you please completely get rid of it (via FTP) and I'll try to make it work again. This is really bugging me cause I have to go through 3 or 4 links to get to my profile, and other than typing it in there are no links to the other profiles. --Daniel
  • IT WORKS!!!!!!! Now please nobody mess with Category.GroupHeader. --Daniel
  • And please everyone who uses this wiki make a profile. --Daniel

How do you delete a page completely once it has been created? Deleting all its content doesn't work. --Daniel

  • Solved the problem myself looking at the docs. For anyone who wants to know, you replace the entire contents of the page with the word "delete" - no caps. This is an edit like any other and can be undone like any other, but the page effectively no longer exists. Read this page for more. --Daniel
  • I'll remember that; thanks for investigating. I've just been deleting them through FTP. --nick
  • Welcome. BTW, the way you do external links is you have to type the complete adress, thus you get linktext rather than just example.com/directory - that'll give you a wiki page called com.directory. --Daniel
  • Oh. I assumed you were already doing that. --nick
  • Sorry for not telling you. It's fixed now anyways, and I know how. --Daniel

The Technology category page has been cleaned up so the stuff put there using !Category is actually visible. What used to be there can be found at OldTechPage? --Daniel

Can we use (:title:) to give our pages a different display title than the actual page name? And will this show up in the Categories pages? I'm new to wiki's, so I'm probably going to be asking questions like this a bit. Please don't get mad at me, if it's already there just direct me to it. --Daniel

  • I vote no. It would be one more thing to remember to do for every page, and we would probably forget for some of them. The style of just leaving the default pages is easier to enforce consistently. --nick
  • I don't think it's any more to remember. You still use the real page name in links, and I'm using alternate link text anyways so that's no more trouble. But it shows up in the Category pages as what it should be, and it looks better, and most importantly, almost every page in the wiki uses it! This one does, as do all the others that came with the wiki. The only ones that don't are the ones we created. So I vote stay consistent by using it, not by removing it from everywhere. And if any one page doesn't, what's the big deal? you remember them by real name anyway. --Daniel
  • Yeah... I probably should have asked before going (:title:) crazy... --max
  • You gave the Home Page a title? I thought all the built-in pages already had it. All the ones we've made don't. --Daniel
  • Whatever. I give up. --nick
  • Okay. I actually may not need it soon, cause once my race gets a name I'll no longer need apostrophes and spaces. --Daniel

Important: I finished converting the pages to the new system we discussed below. Read about the new category system. --nick

I'm writing a style guidelines page, to ensure consistent formatting in the pages. Take a look at it, and contribute! --nick

Should we use the Category.Profiles thing that Grif set up? (If so, I should make a profiles index... As it is, though, you can access them from the page index. --nick

  • Might be a good idea. Isn't it the Profiles category? --max

The Technology and History pages do not comply with the new system. --max

  • Might be a good idea to start articles before linking to them, even if they're just stubs. --grif
  • We really don't need the huge map of different pages like we have with Technology right now. There should only have to be one technology page for a race. We don't need a page with Garling Technology and another page with Garling Programming and another page with Garling Functional Programming. Just combine them all into one page. --max
  • Brilliant! --grif
  • "Not drinking six beers at the same time? Brilliant!" That was a hilarious commericial. --max

Look at the mess Scout made in the categories group!

Bogus pages: Removed because they were messing up the category system. --Daniel

--nick

That is a mess. --max

I'm working on Zalamath technology. You can blank the TS one for the time being. --grif

They shouldn't be categories! --max

  • They're... not? At least, I didn't make them categories... --grif
  • The War definitely shouldn't, and the technology pages should be under the Technology Categories. --max
  • Woop. --grif
